TEACHING THROUGH TEA
TTTutilizes a holistic approach to meeting the developmental needs of youth is premised upon evidence based, peer reviewed pedagogy, derived from the Six Developmental Pathways (SDP) Theory of Change). SDP has been successful in reducing the achievement gap for minority children at the same time it improves the educational outcomes of all students. HTS program approach includes five prongs: 1) academic achievement; 2) community service; 3) cultural awareness; 4) lifestyle improvement; and, international awareness which, taken together (ACCLI), address the social, cognitive, language, physical, ethical and psychological needs of youth in a living social laboratory. TTT program activities provide opportunities for the transfer of skills in real life situations.

Entrepreneur Program: the protégés work in teams, Marketing, Management and Finance to host a series of promotional teas to market their TOW business. The girls invite guests to specialty teas using a set theme. The girls have also established a Tearoom Experience by hosting teas at the historic Woman’s National Democratic Club (Holiday Tea, Cherry Blossom Tea, Civili-Tea.)
Investment Club: the protégés gain exposure to how the stock market works, how to save, how to invest, how to read a stock page, and how to research companies. They also gain greater financial awareness, critical thinking skills and better money management skills.
Ambassadors of Civility: Using the HTS social/civil curriculum, HTS bridges the social gorge for our youth between the family and the civil society. Incorporated in the curriculum are the 5 D’s: discourse, demeanor, decorum, diplomacy and decision making. The program prepares our protégés to exhibit behavior exemplary of the rules of civility in everyday social interactions. This program has led to the creation of the annual Civili-Tea in collaboration with the District of Columbia Public Schools and community groups spotlighting youth who exemplify positive behavior in school and in the community.
A CHARMING LIFE (STARs) IN SCHOOL PROGRAM
The STARs (Sophisticated, Talented, Articulate, Responsible) program is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence and gang membership. The STARs Program utilizes gang preventative curriculum based on the G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Program. The GREAT program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum developed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms which has had success curbing gang violence in urban communities through prevention programs that include lessons that focus on providing life skills to students to help them avoid using delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems.
The HTS STAR school time program is a unique interdisciplinary and creative program that utilizes a sequenced set of visual arts, entrepreneurial and career exploration activities and active forms of learning to motivate the students to excel in school, actively study for the SAT and ACT; seek early admission into college; and select a career that will enable them to support their family and lifestyle choices
CHARMING BY DESIGN
Charming By Design is a unique six-week summer program for 100 DC girls aged 14-15 that emphasizes career exploration, good nutrition, self-awareness, personal responsibility and higher learning. During the six-week program, the students rotate through four team-building tracks (modeling, nutrition, maintaining good self-image; executive, etiquette, employability skills; event planning/marketing and fashion design/sewing).

From a simple scone with Devonshire cream to the Duchess of Bedford’s Formal Afternoon Tea, we have something for every discerning tea lover’s palate: professionally served teas, full tea service (fine linen, china, flatware, candles, flowers, music), and a menu consisting of fresh baked scones, dainty tea sandwiches, assorted tea, and sweet treats.
